THE HOLIDAY POPS IS GOING ON AS SCHEDULED - 12/12 @ 10:45am
In December we continue a beautiful family tradition of performing your favorite music from the Holidays. With the glowing voices of the Asheville Symphony Chorus under Dewitt Tipton and the Asheville Symphony Children's Chorus under Timothy Wilds, our Holiday Concert has become a favorite of Asheville audiences over the years. We hope you will make it one of your treasured traditions in December, too.
MW4 Valentine Delights with Romeo and Juliet
Walton Touch her soft lips and Passacaglia from Henry V
Mozart Concerto for Piano No. 21 “Elvira Madigan”
Dudana Mazmanishvili, pianoRachmaninoff Vocalise
Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet Suite
Continuing with music inspired by Shakespeare, we invite you to join us on Valentine’s weekend for William Walton’s heartfelt music to Henry V and Prokofiev’s brilliant score to Romeo and Juliet. Prokofiev takes you right into the heart of the drama, from the humble, palpitating pangs of first love to the tumult of inter-family strife. The swordfights, the clandestine rendezvous, and the cries of horror and joy are all clearly delineated in this dramatic score. In complete contrast, Rachmaninoff’s simple Vocalise is a song without words - a lovely homage to romance.
MW5 Dvorak's New World Symphony
Walker Lyric for Strings
Haydn Cello Concerto No.2 in D
Matthew Allen, celloDvorak Symphony No. 9 "From the New World"
Composer George Walker will likely be best known for his beautiful Lyric for Strings. Already considered an American masterpiece, the Lyric is brief but haunting, leaving an indelible impression. We then continue our tradition of featuring young artists from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and this season we are pleased to introduce Matthew Allen, who will play Haydn’s ebullient, playful Cello Concerto No. 2. Matthew is fresh from winning the Cassado Competition in Japan, and he is sure to impress with his young energy, talent, and poise.
