Brahms Symphony No. 1

In March we intend to mix things up a bit. Rossini’s quicksilver “Silken Ladder” overture dashes across the stage with panache and unbridled enthusiasm. Then we introduce virtuoso Doug O’Connor, who will present a contrasting pair of works for the saxophone. Doug’s staggering technique is matched by his ability to play to the heights of expressivity, and the Glazunov and Piazolla will showcase those talents. We come to the end of our Brahms symphonic cycle this year, ironically, with his First Symphony. Dubbed “Beethoven’s Tenth,” Brahms earned his place among the best symphonists with a work of great craft and power.
