Wagner Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde

Our community is rich in the visual arts, and in February we highlight this wealth in collaboration between the Asheville Art Museum and the ASO. Beethoven’s 6th Symphony is nicknamed the “Pastoral,” inspired by his many walks through the forests and meadows surrounding Vienna. Taking our cue from Beethoven, we have invited the Art Museum to supply images of our own natural surroundings to accompany the music. Then we invite a young virtuoso from the Cleveland Institute of Music, Jeanette Aufiero, to make her debut in Liszt’s passionate and romantic Piano Concerto No. 1. To cap an evening of Romantic-era delights, we perform Wagner’s transcendent Prelude and Liebestod, beginning with its mysterious first notes to its transformation into a glorious, harmonious finale.
