Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony
November 19, 2011 · Thomas Wolfe Auditorium · 8:00pm
Mahler Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” Ashley Hill, mezzo-soprano Sarah Jane McMahon, soprano Asheville Symphony Chorus
Gustav Mahler’s view of the symphony was larger than life. In a conversation with Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, Mahler said that the symphony must encompass the whole world. How else could one dare take up the mantle of Beethoven, writing music of heroism and epic struggle? How else could one mix together music of great force, brutality, exultation, sorrow, charm, and kitsch? Mahler’s sonic bravery came to an incredible watershed in his Second Symphony, where redemption from mortal struggle could find form in an extended, transfigured symphony that ends with the promise of resurrection. It’s a bold move, and we are thrilled to present this incredible work in its entirety for you in November.
